Melahrini is a very popular Greek dessert cake.

Fluffy cake covered in a sweet syrup and chocolate ganache.

There are several variations of the dish, with unique ingredients used in both the syrup and cake.



*2 eggs
* 1 cup of all-purpose flour
* 1 1/2 cups of sugar
* 3 tbsp cacao powder
* 2 tsp. baking powder
* 2 tsp. baking sod
* 1 tsp. Vanilla extract
* 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
* 1 tsp. cinnamon
* 1 cup of yoghurt
* 1 cup vegetable oil
* 1/2 cup of walnuts

For the syrup:
* 3 cups of sugar
* 2 cups of water
* 1/2 cup orange juice

For ganache:
* 1 cup couverture finely chopped
* 1 cup of cream with 35% fat


Preheat the oven to 180 ° C.

Beat the eggs until fluffy.

In bowl, mix flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, vanilla, breadcrumbs , cinnamon and walnuts. Add yogurt and oil and mix. Add the beaten eggs and mix well.

Transfer the mixture to a floured and buttered baking dish and bake for 30 minutes until cooked well.

Remove the walnut pie from the oven and let it cool, prepare the syrup.

In a pot heat the water together with 3 cups of sugar and orange juice.
Boil and bind the syrup for 5-7 minutes. Pour the hot syrup over the cake and let absorb.

At the same time we are preparing the ganache.
In a saucepan , on medium heat, heat the cream. When it gets hot enough, remove from heat and add the chocolate .
Mix well to homogenize the mixture. Cover the walnut pie with the chocolate ganache, top with some walnuts and allow to stand for 30 minutes.
Cut into pieces and serve.
