Patates Yahni

Patates Yahni – A Greek Comfort Dish

Simple, hearty, and bursting with Mediterranean flavors, Patates Yahni is a classic Greek potato stew that turns humble ingredients into a comforting meal. Slowly simmered in a rich tomato sauce with olive oil, onions, and aromatic spices, this dish is proof that Greek cuisine thrives on simplicity.

What Makes It Special?

  • Extra virgin olive oil gives it a deep, rich flavor.
  • Sweet onions and garlic enhance the sauce.
  • A touch of cinnamon or bay leaf (depending on tradition) adds warmth.
  • Served with crusty bread and feta, it’s the ultimate cozy dish.

Patates Yahni is a reminder of home-cooked meals, Yiayia’s kitchen, and the joy of eating well with loved ones.

Ingredients

1 kg (2.2 lbs) potatoes, peeled and cut into large chunks

1 large onion, finely chopped

2-3 garlic cloves, minced

4-5 ripe tomatoes, grated (or 1 can diced tomatoes)

2 tablespoons tomato paste

1 teaspoon sugar

1 bay leaf

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional, but common in Greek cuisine)

60 ml (¼ cup) olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

500 ml (2 cups) water or vegetable broth

Directions

Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and cook until they become soft and translucent (about 5 minutes). Add the garlic and sauté for another minute.

Add the tomatoes and seasoning: Stir in the grated tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, cinnamon (if using), oregano, bay leaf, salt, and pepper. Cook for about 5-10 minutes until the sauce starts to thicken slightly.

Add the potatoes: Add the potato chunks to the pot and stir to coat them with the tomato mixture.

Simmer: Pour in the water or broth to cover the potatoes. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it simmer for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the potatoes are tender and the sauce has thickened. If the sauce reduces too much, add a bit more water.

Check seasoning: Taste and adjust the salt and pepper, if needed.

Garnish: Once done, remove the bay leaf, and garnish with fresh parsley.

Serving

Serve warm as a main dish with crusty bread or as a side dish to grilled meats or fish. A bit of feta cheese crumbled on top can also add a nice touch!

Enjoy your delicious Greek Patates Yahni!
