Greek Kokinisto Mosharaki me Patates (Beef Stew in Tomato Sauce with Potatoes) is a traditional Greek dish. The beef is slow-cooked in a rich tomato sauce and served with potatoes, making it a hearty and flavorful meal. Here’s a simple recipe for you.
1 kg (2.2 lbs) beef chuck, cut into large chunks
1 large onion, finely chopped
3 garlic cloves, minced
3 large tomatoes, grated (or 1 can of crushed tomatoes)
2 tbsp tomato paste
1 cup red wine (optional, but recommended)
1 cinnamon stick (or ½ tsp ground cinnamon)
5-6 allspice berries (or 1 tsp ground allspice)
1 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tsp ground cloves (optional)
Salt and freshly ground pepper
1/2 cup olive oil
4-5 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into large chunks
Water or beef stock as needed

Directions
Brown the Beef:
Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
Add the beef in batches, searing until browned on all sides. Remove the beef from the pot and set it aside.
Sauté the Onions and Garlic:
In the same pot, add the chopped onions and sauté for 5-6 minutes until softened.
Add the garlic and cook for another minute.
Add Tomato and Spices:Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 1-2 minutes to release its flavor.
Add the grated tomatoes (or canned tomatoes), cinnamon stick, bay leaves, allspice, cumin, cloves (if using), and a generous pinch of salt and pepper.
Deglaze with Wine (Optional):Pour in the red wine, stirring to deglaze the pot and release any brown bits at the bottom.
Allow the wine to simmer for 3-4 minutes until it reduces slightly.
Add Beef and Simmer:Return the beef to the pot, making sure it’s well coated with the tomato and spice mixture.
Add enough water or beef stock to cover the beef.
Bring to a boil, then lower the heat to a gentle simmer. Cover the pot and let it cook for about 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the beef is tender.
Add the Potatoes:After the beef is almost tender, add the potato chunks to the pot.
Continue cooking for another 30-40 minutes, until the potatoes are soft and the sauce has thickened.
Adjust Seasoning and Serve:Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt and pepper if needed.
Serve hot with crusty bread or over rice.
Tips:
- You can also serve it with pasta or mashed potatoes.
- If you like, garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving for a touch of freshness.
