Discover the Deliciousness of Galotyri!
Galotyri (Γαλοτύρι) is a traditional Greek cheese that originates from Epirus and Thessaly.
It is a soft, creamy, and spreadable cheese made from sheep’s or goat’s milk (or a combination of both).
The name Galotyri means “milk cheese” (γάλα = milk, τυρί = cheese), which reflects its smooth, yogurt-like texture. It has a slightly tangy and mildly salty flavor, often compared to a mix between feta and yogurt. Galotyri is usually aged for a short period and is made using a fermentation process that gives it its characteristic creamy consistency. It is commonly enjoyed as a spread on bread, as part of a meze platter, or paired with grilled meats and vegetables. Since it’s soft and easily mixed, it can also be used as a dip with olive oil and herbs.
If you love rich, creamy cheeses with a unique flavor, you have to try making your own Galotyri! This traditional Greek cheese is made from a blend of goat’s milk, feta, and full-fat yogurt, creating an incredibly smooth and tangy spread that’s perfect for your bread, crackers, or even drizzled over salads.
Ingredients
1 1/2 liters of goat’s milk (boiled for 10 minutes, to increase the fat content)
1 kg of goat’s feta cheese (cut into small cubes or crumbled)
350g full-fat fresh yogurt
1 tsp salt (adjust to your taste; I used 1/2 tsp for a less salty version)
Directions
In a bowl, combine the lukewarm boiled milk, salt, and yogurt. Mix well.
Add the crumbled feta cheese to the mixture and stir gently.
Cover the bowl and place it in the fridge for 6-7 days.
After a week, your Galotyri will be ready to enjoy with its irresistible creamy texture and rich flavor!
Perfect for adding to your Mediterranean spread or as a topping for your favorite dishes.
