Kadayfi Bites

These little golden nests of shredded filo dough, known as “kadayfi,” are filled with a rich mixed nuts, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom mixture, baked until crispy, and then soaked in a fragrant honey, orange syrup.

Each bite bursts with juicy sweetness, balanced by the warmth of spices and the delicate crisp of the filo.

Perfect as a bite-sized dessert or a treat with coffee, these bites are a mouthwatering taste of traditional Greek decadence!

250g shredded phyllo dough (kadayifi)

100g ghee butter, melted

150g (1 cup) mixed nuts (walnuts, pistachios, or almonds), chopped

1 tsp cinnamon + 1/2 tsp ground cloves

1/2 tsp cardamom

Small coffee cups (for shaping)

For the Syrup

200g sugar

240ml (1 cup) water

1 tbsp lemon juice

1 tbsp honey

1 tsp orange blossom water, (optional)

Directions

In aa small bowl compine the chopped mixed nuts with cinnamon, cloves and cardamon and set aside.

Prepare the syrup.

Combine sugar and water in a saucepan over medium heat.

Stir until the sugar dissolves, then bring to a boil.

Lower the heat and simmer for 8-10 minutes.

Add lemon juice, honey, and orange blossom or rose water.

Remove from heat and let it cool.

Prepare the Kadayifi dough.

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

Gently separate the strands of the kadayifi dough.

Pour the melted butter over the dough and gently mix with your hands to ensure the butter is evenly distributed.

Shape the bites.

Take a small amount of the buttered kadayifi dough and gently press it into the bottom and sides of a small coffee cup to create a cup shape.

Fill each cup with a spoonful of chopped spiced nuts.

Take another small portion of the kadayifi dough and place it over the nuts, pressing gently to close the cup.

Bake the Kadayifi Bites.

Place the filled kadayifi cups onto a greased baking tray.

Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until golden and crispy.

Remove from the oven and immediately pour the cooled syrup over the hot kadayifi bites.

Allow the bites to absorb the syrup.

Serve.

Let the bites cool and set for about 30 minutes.

Gently remove them from the coffee cups and place them on a serving plate.

Garnish with crushed pistachios or a drizzle of honey if desired.
